Student visa subclass 500
With this visa, you can:
*Enrol in an eligible course of study in Australia
*Travel in/out of Australia
*Work an unlimited number of hours
This is a temporary visa for a period of study not exceeding 5 years. The type and length of the course will determine the number of hours that can be stayed.
Children enrolled in Years 1-4 of primary school will usually only be granted a student visa for a maximum of 3 years.
If you want to stay in Australia for longer:
To continue your studies in Australia, you must apply for a new student visa;
If your student visa is due to expire before you graduate, you have the option of renewing your student visa or applying for a visitor's visa (subclass 600), for which you'll need a letter from your education provider with your graduation date.
If you hold or have held a student visa in the last six months and have completed specific accreditation in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for a temporary graduate visa (visa category 485)
If a recent engineering graduate from a recognised institution, you may be eligible for a Skilled Recognised Graduate Visa (Visa Class 476).
If you wish to stay for a longer period of time for other reasons, you must apply for a new visa appropriate to your circumstances.
Other applicants
When you submit your visa application, you can add your dependants to your application. Your dependants can be.
Your partner, or your and your partner's unmarried children (up to 18 years of age), if the children are over 18 years of age they will need to apply for a separate visa.

English language requirements
In March 2024, the Department of Immigration updated the English language requirements for student visas so that you must complete an English language test within any of the following:
1. 2 years before submitting your visa application
2. 2 years before a decision is made on your visa application if you did not provide evidence of an English language test when you submitted your application.
The table below shows information on English language test providers, including information on the English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and the minimum combined score you must achieve to meet the English language requirements for a student visa.
Note:
From 23 March 2024, the Genuine Student requirement replaces the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for Student visas.
Each applications lodged for a Student or Temporary Graduate visa will be assessed under the New English Language Requirements.
