News for Skilled Sponsored Workers
From 7 December 2024, major updates to the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) visa make permanent residency more accessible for skilled workers. These changes affect both the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) and Direct Entry (DE) streams, in line with the Australian Government's Migration Strategy.
Key Updates to the TRT Stream
Work Experience Requirement:
All periods of sponsored employment (not limited to the sponsoring employer) count toward the 2-year requirement.
Employment in related fields or after a promotion also qualifies.
Applicants must provide evidence of meeting this requirement instead of relying on their nominating employer.
Income Threshold (CSIT):
The Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) of AUD 73,150 replaces TSMIT and will be indexed annually.
Age Exemptions:
Exemptions for regional medical practitioners and high-income earners continue.
Otherwise, applicants must be under 45 at the time of application.
New Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL):
Replacing outdated lists, the CSOL includes 456 occupations in fields such as construction, cyber security, agriculture, health, and education.
The list is informed by labour market analysis and stakeholder consultation through Jobs and Skills Australia.
CSIT Income Threshold:
The AUD 73,150 threshold also applies to DE stream applicants, replacing the previous TSMIT.
These updates aim to streamline the pathway to permanent residency, ensuring skilled workers in critical sectors can contribute effectively to Australia’s economy.
